Money doesn't buy...

Recently it came to my attention that people think I have money.  I had to laugh outloud when I heard this one.  Trust me on this one, I don't.  What I do have is a passion for what I do and it's way more valuable than anything you will ever buy.

Money isn't the root of all evil, people make it the root of evil.  Kind of like guns, they implore a false sense of power.  Taylor and I were talking about this awhile back and within a couple days she showed me a study that was done by a Berkley professor.

Here is the study if you would like to take a look:

I find it interesting how work, being frugal with spending and spending in places that makes sense give off the impression that a person has money.  Money isn't power, understanding how to use money wisely is power.

Here's an example.  When I began the West 17th renovation, I knew up front that it was going to be a huge investment.  What's interesting is that from the street looking in, most think I'm spending thousands and thousands of dollars.  Trust me on this, I'm investing waaaaaayyyyyyyyyy more time and energy.

Yeah, I have a skill that allows me to do most of my work.  However, in no way does this mean I have money.  What people percieve is rarely the truth.  Money doesn't buy my happiness!!  If it did, I would have kept my job managing an oil discovery company and NEVER taken a teaching position.

Let me finish with this.  There has never been a business I've started or a house I've renovated because I thought I would make MONEY.  I did it because I was passionate about it.  That passion translated into making a living.  I would rather live in a cardboard box and eat cold green beans and be happy, than to live behind a front door filled with debt and greed.

Take it or leave it, that's my advice to anyone who chases the dollar, stop.  Chase your dreams, be frugal, wise and willing to sacrifice, the money will come.

The death of my son taught me many lessons, but one of the biggest lessons is that you only live once and nothing will ever matter after the last heartbeat.  There's nothing like the sound of rain on a metal roof, if you're listening.
